Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application:

PhD position in Synchrotron Radiation Studies of 2-D Materials

at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: March 2012. Research division: Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics.

The division has a broad research scope based on experimental studies of the electronic structure of matter. Systems investigated range from free atomic, molecular and cluster species to liquids, molecular materials and single crystal hard materials. Details of the current activities can be found at http://www.physics.uu.se/molcond/. The research group is housed in the Ångström laboratory that constitutes a major interdisciplinary research centre for materials science with a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment in modern laboratories. The laboratory is also housing advanced theoretical activities.

Project description: The successful applicant will grow and investigate two-dimensional systems, like graphene and BN on well-controlled substrates. The research is focused on the electronic and structural properties of these systems as well as the possibility to tune the properties of these systems by different means, e.g. by chemical additives. For the experimental research different spectroscopic tools will be used at primarily the MAX IV laboratory in Lund and at the BESSY II storage ring in Berlin. The successful candidate will be located in Lund.

The position will start at the earliest in March 2012. The PhD position is for four years. Further information about the postgraduate education at the department is available at http://www.physics.uu.se.

Qualifications expected: The applicant is expected to have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent. The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, and a verified list of course grades. Experience of synchrotron radiation techniques is considered a merit. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. The applicants are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Local salary rules will apply.

The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 Chapter 1-7 §§ and in University rules http://regler.uu.se/.
