Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application:
Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry
at the Department of Chemistry - BMC
Biochemistry at Uppsala University has a long history of developing and exploiting novel methodologies to address basic scientific questions concerning the characteristics of biomolecules and their biological function. This is still pursued at the highest international level but advancements in biochemistry and adjacent disciplines have contributed to diversification of the research in the program. The focus today is on molecular recognition and catalysis, addressing fundamental questions concerning molecular structure-function relationships and the design of both ligands and proteins. The research is inherently translational and relevant for drug discovery, clinical diagnostics, medicine, biotechnology and green chemistry. Teaching is carried out in a range of educational programs, including the natural science and engineering programs in chemistry and biology.
Duties: The position includes teaching at basic, advanced and postgraduate levels, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of post graduate students. The holder shall also follow the development in the subject field and the development of society which is of relevance to the work at the university. The holder is expected to teach and have course responsibility for basic and advanced courses in biochemistry and neighbouring subjects within chemistry and biology (e. g., biophysical chemistry, protein technology, infection biology) as well as to teach basic chemistry courses.
Qualifications required: To be eligible for a position as associate professor, the applicant must hold a Ph.D or have equivalent academic qualifications (or have other professional skills), and have pedagogic proficiency. According to the appointment regulations of Uppsala University it is also a general requirement for employment as associate professor to have completed suitable pedagogical training for 10 weeks or have corresponding qualifications. If exceptional circumstances prevail, pedagogical training for teaching at university level can be acquired during the first year of employment.
The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. The holder is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.
A person who is offered a position as associate professor/senior lecturer can be employed as professor if she/he has requested this and is subsequently judged to be sufficiently competent.
Ranking: In ranking eligible candidates, equal importance will be given to scientific and pedagogic proficiency. In examining the scientific proficiency particular importance will be attached to research qualifications within biochemistry, especially within specializations which today are not well represented in the department and thus will widen the competence in for instance protein chemistry, membrane chemistry and structural biochemistry. Experimentally based research with expertise in advanced biochemical, biophysical/bioanalytical, and cell and molecular biological methods, supplemented with theoretical methods is a merit.
Pedagogic proficiency will be assessed as carefully as scientific proficiency. In examining the pedagogic proficiency, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination (within the subject field,) will be considered. Teaching skills must be well documented such that the quality can be assessed.
Other qualifications: Administrative proficiency is important and will be considered. Ability to corporate with the surrounding society and to inform the public about research and development work will also be considered. The position may involve administrative roles, such as head of department, why ability and interest for leadership will be given a large weight in the evaluation of candidates.
Administration skills are demonstrated through ability in overall operational planning, ability to organise and lead personnel and ability to cooperate. Ability to inform the public about research and development work is demonstrated by popular scientific activities, for example participating in extramural education, publishing popular scientific papers and participating in public discussions on topics of education and research.
In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of documented qualifications, competence and skills, is judged the most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
Personal circumstances that may be of positive relevance in merit evaluation, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in the list of qualifications (CV).
The university is striving for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Since most teachers of the Faculty are men, women are especially invited to apply for this position.
