Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

The Dag Hammarskjöld Professor in Peace and Conflict Research

at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research

Background and scientific field: The field of peace and conflict research at Uppsala University is the study of the onset, dynamics, and resolution of armed conflict. Research at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research is conducted in all three sub-areas, with a particular focus on theory-driven empirical research, wherein the collection and analysis of large amounts of data play a prominent role.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Professorship was established by the Swedish Parliament in 1981, and was given its current research profile by the Swedish Government in 1984. As the first holder of the chair is now retiring, the profile of the position is expected to remain largely unchanged. There are many internationally recognized researchers employed at the Department today, and the holder of the Dag Hammarskjöld Professorship is expected to assume a leading role in this environment.

Duties: General responsibility for research and for teaching at the graduate level within the discipline of Peace and Conflict Research. Teaching and tutoring at all levels. Conduct research. Public outreach regarding research and developments in the research field. Planning (incl research applications), leading and participating in research projects. Administrative duties, as well as external and internal commissions of trust may also be part of the duties.

Qualifications required: According to Chap. 4, § 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance the eligibility criteria for employment as professor are scientific as well as pedagogic proficiency. According to Uppsala University’s appointment regulations, it is also a general requirement that teachers have any other skills which are necessary to carry out their duties proficiently. According to the employment policy of Uppsala University, scientific proficiency should be demonstrated through independent research that significantly exceeds the qualifications required for the Swedish “docent” title. Competence in research planning and leadership are important.

The applicant must have the teaching proficiency required for the position and in addition, unless there are special reasons, must have formal pedagogical training relevant for the tasks associated with this position. The assessment of pedagogical proficiency will consider planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervising activities and examination.

The ability to teach in English is a required qualification.

Ranking: For this position, the ranking will be based primarily on the scientific and teaching competence of the applicants, with special emphasis on scientific proficiency. This order of priorities in the application of the different ranking criteria is not absolute. A combined consideration of all grounds of assessment could result, for instance, in an applicant vastly superior regarding pedagogical proficiency being ranked higher than a candidate with somewhat stronger scientific qualifications who is considered less qualified pedagogically.

Equal importance is given to the assessment of teaching competence and scientific competence.

The assessment of scientific competence will primarily be based upon the quality and quantity of the submitted publications with consideration taken to depth and breadth. Also considered part of scientific proficiency is the degree of independence in developing and running research projects, and contributions to the international scientific discussion through publication in international journals or other international outlets. Scientific publication in highly ranked international journals and presses are particularly meritorious.

In assessing the pedagogic competence, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervising activities and examination will be considered.

Administrative and other skills of importance for the position will be considered. Attention will also be given to applicants’ ability to: co-operate, develop and supervise activities and staff, interact with society at large and to inform the public about research and developmental work.

In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged the most suitable to carry out and develop the tasks within the position and contribute to a positive development of the activities in the department.

The University strives to attain a more balanced gender distribution among its teachers, so women are especially encouraged to apply for this position.
