Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:
PhD position in molecular systems biology; Microfluidics and single molecule detection
at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Starting fall 2012, or by appointment.
The main objective of the Elf Laboratory is to develop new technology for studying intracellular chemical reactions at high spatial precision and temporal resolution. The methods are used to answer fundamental questions about gene regulation and kinetics in individual living cells and how these processes are different from those studied in a test tube. Project description: The PhD student will develop and build microfluidic devices and optical systems that will be used to investigate the reasons for differences between genetically identical bacterial cells and how these differences result in that the bacteria respond differently to antibiotics. The experimental method will be used to test theoretical models for the emergence of antibiotic resistance and persistence.
Qualifications expected: We are looking for candidates with Masters degree in biotechnology, biology, experimental physics or similar with a strong interest in fundamental science. Knowledge and skills in microbiology, microfluidics, optics, advanced fluorescence microscopy, previous research experience and high grades will be considered advantageous. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). You will be expected to teach in Swedish or English. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement.
Application procedure: The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. Also two letters of recommendation should be included in the application.
Local salary rules will apply.
The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 Chapter 1-7 §§ and in University rules http://regler.uu.se/.
